Imagine it has just snowed 12 inches in about as many hours, and you have to drive to work or you have an important appointment you simply can’t miss.
In southern Idaho, that scenario isn’t entirely far-fetched. Though in the long run snow is a blessing in this drought-prone high-desert region, in the short term it can be a nuisance -- and sometimes downright dangerous.
It’s the job of workers in the Twin Falls Street Department to minimize the hazards of snowfall. Without their around-the clock willingness to respond to heavy snowfall, most residents wouldn’t be able to move around the city as they are accustomed.
There are more than 250 miles of city streets to be plowed and/or sanded when a major storm moves in. The street department has five trucks that are used for these purposes. That means each truck will cover about 50 miles.
